Blog post 2

How has growing success impacted my beliefs on assessment?

Growing success has impacted my beliefs in a way that it allowed me to realize that when it comes to assessment it really is the process of gathering information that accurately reflects how well a student is doing in the classroom and if he/she is meeting the curriculum expectations.

When I used to think of assessment I used to picture some sort of test or evaluations. Talking about growing success has impacted and changed the way I think of assessment. I now realize that the primary purpose of assessing a student is to improve the student learning. Not to just simply get a grade from the student. The main purpose is improving the students learning and I have learned that this is demonstrated in both assessments for learning and assessment as learning.

I used to think assessment was done in one particular way and that was to look at the final product, however that’s because that’s what I remember from being in school. But there are different ways you can assess a student with the purpose of student learning. You can assess a student throughout lesson units and keep track if the student is demonstrating and understanding, thinking, communication, and application.  To relate this to the final product, my beliefs have changed in a way where I have a deeper understanding of various type of evidence that are used in considering a student’s final grade for a report, keeping into account observations, conversations, and student product (test, exams assignments).

My beliefs have changed overall where I now have a deeper understanding of the process in growing success on assessment and that there are essential steps in assessment for learning and assessment as learning. Us as teachers need to plan assessment and integrate it with instruction, share the learning goals and success criteria with the students, gather information about students learning before, during, and near the end and use assessment to inform instruction, and guide the next steps to help the students grow in their progress towards achieving their learning goals.

Learning object

I used the learning object ClassDojo,  you can create multiple objects and task in a classroom  using this tool. I really enjoyed the tool ClassDojo and I have had the opportunity to see it being used in a actual classroom setting. It can be used on phones and tablets, it encourages positive behaviours and class participation. You could even use it to reward students with an established reward system that is possible in the tool

To use ClassDojo in a learning object

Step 1:
- Content : black holes in space

Step 2:
- Learning object type : Presentation
- Create a presentation on how black holes are formed and the different kinds that are possible to occur.

Step 3:
- Design develop and share.
- Take time to create a nice presentation, reach the daily goals for the project, to ease into the final product.

With ClassDojo this learning object can be established in a way where i can reward students with points when they accomplish a certain part of the project on time, on the due date.

The students can also establish there goals for there project.

As a teacher I can give them immediate feedback and points when deserved.

You can visit this tool and explore further into detail by visiting the website https://www.classdojo.com/homepage-v12/

Enjoy :)

GH Progress

The Genius Hour project is started to take shape !

I am currently doing my research, and getting in touch with Imovie to tackle the task of making my first ever trailer.

Every time I come into this class I learn new ways that I can implement technology into my future teaching.

The week that just passed, I had the chance to catch up on my research for my Genius Hour project (Creation of black holes and their implications). I ended up visiting the Nasa website and it gave me a good solid base to grow off of for the rest of my project.

I learned that there are different kinds of black holes, some can have a tiny amount of matter (the size of a single atom) compared to some that will have huge amounts of matter all put into a dense pin point. I also learned that black holes actually spray out "matter" through "jets" that is only visible through X ray lenses.

A little expected problem I encountered is that we know so much but also so little about black holes and  that finding information can be hard at times.

A question I keep asking my self for my project is how can I grab all this information and make this Ted Talk interesting and engaging for the people that will be viewing it. Keeping it interesting.

From here on out my research will be focused on trying to find interesting little details that most people probably aren't aware of for black holes. Trying to stay away from the obvious and dig a little deeper.

Looking forward on finding new intriguing information.

Till next time :)

Feeling educated

Now a few weeks into my teacher education program and being in a technology class, I have found myself using technology in different ways, and finding interesting ways that I could integrate it into my future teaching. I felt little overwhelmed at first with all this new tech info. But I can say that I am becoming more and more comfortable using these new tools.

After being on topics of TED talks for the last little while I found myself watching speeches and walking away feeling refreshed, educated, motivated, and informed.

I took a little bit of time to focus in on my research but I plan to do more of in depth research this week. - One little problem I am running into is the fact that Black holes are so well known in the science world but we also know very little about them. For obvious reasons.

Questions I have run into myself are wondering how difficult it will be to find the appropriate information for my presentation and how am I going to make it interesting and engaging for the viewers. I would like my presentation to be fun and interesting.

I am thinking that for me to get a good foundation to my project I will need to possibly visit the BrockU library, get some concrete information from academic books and then further my research on the internet and find scholarly videos and articles.

Looking forward to working on it ! :)

Genius hour project idea

Genius hour project

Hello everybody I have decided that i will be doing my Genius hour project on how black holes are formed and what are the implications of them. I have always been into astronomy and the crazy scientifically facts that come along with it.

Super excited to get started on this project for my tech class. I will be starting my research and keeping my blog up to date with cool interesting facts that I run into.

Heres a little taste of how powerful a black hole can be and the implication it can have on its surrounding!

Enjoy until next time :)

Copyright

Hi everyone, this blog will be about information acquired on copyright ! In todays technological world a lot of technology is used in learning and in schools. Teachers just as much as students are using wonderful resources.

I was always aware that there were laws and licensing behind copyrighting information, but I was never aware that you could filter searches to properly find digital media that has obtained permission to be used. I learned on how to properly find media that is allowed to be use by the creative commons licensing and the different types that can be combined. For example attribution, Share Alike, Non-Commercial, and No Derivative Works.

In my future in teaching it will be very important to:
- Teach students the importance of following copyright & how to properly use an image that has been created by someone else.
- To show them how to find the information that the creators provided for us about the creative commons licenses on their creation (product).
- To teach the students how to be able to determine if a video or an image can legally be used after finding the copyright licensing attached to it.
- And lastly to teach them the importance behind citing the source that needs to be inserted. This is an essential aspect when using digital information & media.

Introduction

Hi my name is Vincent Savain, I am in my first year of teacher college at Brock University and my ultimate goal is to become a physical education teacher. I did my undergraduate in Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa. In grade 9 or 10 I realized wanted to become a physical education teacher and from that day on I made sure to take the necessary steps in the right direction.

I am very excited to see what this program has to offer for me and give me the tools I need for my future career.

My blogs will be including various post about my journey and different classes I will be taking through my teacher education program. I will be posting about various tools that I have learned about, digital resources and experiences that I encounter in my journey to becoming a certified teacher.
